This week 160 State Parties to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), are participating in the second round of negotiations for a global treaty to combat tobacco smuggling. Google has pledged $15m to fund six projects that aim to identify and prevent infectious diseases that have the potential to become global pandemics. One of the major projects funded by the internet giant will work on spotting dangerous pathogens that leap from animals to humans (zoonoses ). Guardian UK

The Oct 31 deadline to submit nominations for the Gates Award for Global Health is fast approaching.
